St. Francis Medical Center Continues to Provide Region's Highest Level of Care for Expectant Mothers and Babies During COVID-19 Pandemic
MONROE, LA – St. Francis Medical Center provides Northeast Louisiana with the highest level of care available for new mothers and newborns. Having a Level III Obstetrical Unit (OB) and Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) gives added reassurance to new mothers with high-risk pregnancies, complicated deliveries, or premature babies.
The top priority at St. Francis when caring for new mothers and babies is to offer the safest environment possible. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, St. Francis recently updated its care policy to ensure additional safety measures for expectant and new mothers, newborns, and their support persons. The update included the incorporation of COVID-19 testing to ensure both mothers and babies are safe and comfortable during their time at St. Francis.
Preadmit testing for COVID-19 is being provided for any expectant mother scheduled for a c-section or induction. If an expectant mother comes to St. Francis Medical Center in active labor, COVID-19 testing will be provided in the Labor & Delivery unit.
New mothers testing positive for COVID-19 will be allowed to have one asymptomatic support person present with them throughout their stay once consent is obtained. This support person must remain in the room with the new mother and baby following delivery and for the duration of their hospital stay.
Should a positive COVID-19 mother decide to room-in with her baby, their support person will be able to stay in the room to help with the baby. If a new mother is positive COVID-19 and would prefer that St. Francis nursing staff provide care for her baby to help prevent exposure, the baby's assigned nurse will provide one-on-one care. Following two negative COVID-19 tests over 48 hours obtained on the infant, the baby will be moved to the newborn nursery.
